Moss Stitch Scarf in Rare Manx Wool
This beautiful, extra long scarf is a one-off piece, hand knitted with 100% rare breed Manx Loaghtan wool.
Hand knitted in Saddleworth, North West England, with "Rare Manx" wool, from Well-i-Hole Farm, Saddleworth, it is the natural colour of the sheep! Measuring approx. 23cm wide x 235cm long.
This small farm nestles at the side of the Pennines in North West England, where the farmers are passionate about preserving this "at risk" breed.
Manx Loaghtan are a primitive, hardy breed with horns, originally from the Isle of Mann, "loaghtan" meaning mouse-brown in Manx. Their wool is considered to be very soft and silky, and the feel of this knitwear certainly reflects that.
The wool is spun in small batches at a mill in Yorkshire.
The fibre that makes this hat has been grown, scoured, spun and knitted within the North of England. The Peg Loomer is part of the Northern England Fibreshed - a group committed to utilising and promoting the use of fibres grown and processed within the North.
Buying local wool knitwear is a highly sustainable choice, with a vastly reduced carbon footprint - no shipping from the other side of the world! Choosing wool over synthetic fibres means no micro-plastics released into our environment. It also supports our local farmers to preserve rare, native breeds, and local crafters and small businesses.
A small cork label with "The Peg Loomer" is added on the end of the scarf.
