Local and sustainable!
Tested by Cathy at Lazykate Textiles. The staple length is fairly short at 6-12cm and the wool is carded, giving you a more rustic result. Perfect spun long draw, making a light, lofty and warm woollen yarn.
This small farm nestles at the side of the Pennines in North West England, where the farmers are passionate about preserving this "at risk" breed. Manx Loaghtan are an ancient, hardy breed with horns, originally from the Isle of Mann. Loaghtan means mouse-brown in Manx. They are beautiful, inquisitive animals and having got to know the farmers I can safely say that their sheep are treated very well. Their wool is considered to be very soft and silky.
I have been working with this flock's wool for a while, hand-washing it to use in my peg loom rugs and felted decorations. I couldn't use it all but felt it was such a shame for it to be wasted. I found Halifax Spinning Mill, a small Yorkshire mill working tirelessly to ensure that processing small batches of breed-specific British wool can be viable.
The Peg Loomer is part of the Northern England Fibreshed - a group committed to utilising and promoting the use of fibres grown and processed within the North. This wool has not left the North of England.
Buying British wool is a highly sustainable choice, with a vastly reduced carbon footprint - no shipping from the other side of the world! Choosing wool over synthetic fibres means no micro-plastics released into our environment. It also supports our local farmers to preserve rare, native breeds.
