65cm loom kit: make a rug!
Make your own rug, throw or bench runner.
These kits contain approximately 700g of British wool to make your first peg loom rug, measuring approximately 45cm x 80cm, a 100g ball of cotton warp yarn, and a high quality peg loom that you can use to weave again and again! This is a simple and therapeutic weaving technique which produces a finished product in not much time at all. It might take you 4-6 hours from start to finish when you first start.
The Peg Looms are made in Yorkshire from British hardwood. They have one row of peg holes, spaced to allow the loom to be used for chunky weaving using alternate peg holes (35mm spacing), and finer weaving using every peg hole (17.5mm).
At this width you can weave up to approximately 62cm (as some width is lost when the weave comes off the loom). And of course you can choose to go much smaller, using only a few of the peg holes.
The wooden dowel pegs have a 3mm hole for the warp to be threaded through. Pegs are included with your loom, plus 1 as a spare. I also include a threader which makes warping the loom quick and easy.
Pegs are included plus a threader for warping your loom which is very helpful, along with 100g ball of cotton warp thread.
You'll also receive a copy of my own detailed Peg Loom Weaving Guidance that I have developed after lots of learning and improving over the last few years! These also include guidance on how to wash a fleece if you'd like to follow the full process from raw fleece to finished product.
The wool is all British, and much of it breed specific and traceable. It is either carded sliver (combed, smooth) - or uncarded fleece showcasing the natural textures of the wool. There are a variety of natural shades available. Choices usually include:
- white carded Whitefaced Woodland wool from Temple Newsam Farm in Leeds
- brown carded Manx Loaghtan wool from Well-i-hole Farm, Saddleworth
- dark grey carded "mill waste" - a blend of British wool created when the mill runs wool through to clean the machinery between each batch
- light grey carded "mill waste"
- white mule fleece with some curls or crimps
- textured Shetland and Coloured Ryeland, with grey and brown tones and crimps
- dark brown/black Black Welsh Mountain uncarded
Please detail in the notes section whether you have a preference on colours and whether you prefer carded, textured or a mix.
E.g. greys and white in a mix of carded and textured, or a mix of colours in carded. If you can't decide or don't mind I'll be happy to choose for you.
I like to do a mix of textured and carded. Carded wool is easier and quicker to weave with as it is more a uniform size, whereas the uncarded textured wool may need pulling back into a strip to weave with. It will be thinner in some parts, and need more overlapping. This is all explained in the guidance notes. Please note that the uncarded wool may contain bits of vegetation matter (VM) such as hay and tiny specs of dirt. It is impossible to get the wool completely clean without carding it. You can pick these bits out as you weave or when you're finished.
