Make your own woolly seat pad, rug, meditation mat or pet mat!
These kits contain enough wool and warp thread to make your chosen project, plus a copy of my own detailed Peg Loom Weaving Guidance that I have developed after lots of learning and improving over the last few years! These also include guidance on how to wash a fleece in case you'd ever like to follow the full process from raw fleece to finished product.
Mat Kit: approx. 250g of wool & precut warp threads to make a mat approx 35 x 35cm. You can choose to add a full ball of warp thread instead in the drop down list.
Rug Kit: approx. 700g of wool & ball of cotton warp thread.
Circular Mat Kit: approx. 350g of wool & ball of cotton warp thread. This includes specific Circular Weaving Guidance for those who already know how to do regular weaving on a peg loom and want to discover new possibilities!
The wool is all British, and much of it breed specific. It is either carded sliver (combed, smooth) - or uncarded fleece showcasing the natural textures of the wool. There are a variety of natural shades available and I can put together a selection for you or you can tell me your preferences.
Choices usually include:
- brown carded Manx Loaghtan wool from Well-i-hole Farm, Saddleworth
- white or black/brown "mill waste" - a blend of British wool created when the mill runs wool through to clean the machinery between each batch
- white mule fleece with some curls or crimps
- textured Coloured Ryeland or Shetland, with grey and brown tones and crimps
- dark brown/black Black Welsh Mountain or Zwartbles, uncarded
Please detail in the notes section whether you have a preference on colours and whether you prefer carded, textured or a mix.
E.g. greys and white in a mix of carded and textured, or a mix of colours in carded.
I like to do a mix of textured and carded. Carded wool is easier and quicker to weave with as it is more a uniform size, whereas the uncarded textured wool may need pulling back into a strip to weave with. It will be thinner in some parts, and need more overlapping. This is all explained in the guidance notes. Please note that the uncarded wool may contain bits of vegetation matter (VM) such as hay and tiny specs of dirt. It is impossible to get the wool completely clean without carding it. You can pick these bits out as you weave or when you're finished.
