40cm Peg Loom Kit: make a small mat

£50.00 - £53.50

Make your own woolly seat pad or pet mat!

These kits contain enough wool (250g) and warp thread to make your first seat pad or pet mat, and a high quality peg loom that you can use to weave again and again! This is a simple and therapeutic weaving technique which produces a finished product in not much time at all. It might take you 2-2.5 hours from start to finish when you first start.

The Peg Looms are made in Yorkshire from British hardwood, with 2 rows of pegs for finer and chunkier weaving (spaced at 20mm and 32mm). This 40cm loom gives you a width of 35cm between the wider spaced pegs, and 37cm between the narrower spaced pegs. Bear in mind that you tend to loose a few cm in the width when the weave comes off the loom, depending on the wool or material used, so if you'd like to be able to weave chunky mats or rugs of between 35-45cm wide you should go for the larger 50cm loom.

19 pegs are included plus a threader for warping your loom which is very helpful, along with enough cotton warp thread to make your first mat measuring approximately 32cm square. If you would prefer to add a full ball of warp thread to use for several projects please select this option from the drop down list.

You'll also receive a copy of my own detailed Peg Loom Weaving Guidance that I have developed after lots of learning and improving over the last few years! These also include guidance on how to wash a fleece if you'd like to follow the full process from raw fleece to finished product.

The wool come in 5 x 50g balls (unless you request all one colour), it is all British, and much of it breed specific and traceable. It is either carded sliver (combed, smooth) - or uncarded fleece showcasing the natural textures of the wool. There are a variety of natural shades available. Choices usually include:

- white carded Whitefaced Woodland wool from Temple Newsam Farm in Leeds
- brown carded Manx Loaghtan wool from Well-i-hole Farm, Saddleworth
- dark grey carded "mill waste" - a blend of British wool created when the mill runs wool through to clean the machinery between each batch
- light grey carded "mill waste"
- white mule fleece with some curls or crimps
- textured Coloured Ryeland, with grey and brown tones and crimps
- dark brown/black Black Welsh Mountain uncarded

Please detail in the notes section whether you have a preference on colours and whether you prefer carded, textured or a mix.
E.g. greys and white in a mix of carded and textured, or a mix of colours in carded. If you can't decide or don't mind I'll be happy to choose for you.

I like to do a mix of textured and carded. Carded wool is easier and quicker to weave with as it is more a uniform size, whereas the uncarded textured wool may need pulling back into a strip to weave with. It will be thinner in some parts, and need more overlapping. This is all explained in the guidance notes. Please note that the uncarded wool may contain bits of vegetation matter (VM) such as hay and tiny specs of dirt. It is impossible to get the wool completely clean without carding it. You can pick these bits out as you weave or when you're finished.
